I was able to get out on Wed evening and post fliers around the south side of State St. Hopefully this will be able to bring some awareness as to what our group is doing within the next few weeks. Also this week we got the chance to work with others in the class which turned out to be a good experience. It was not really hard for my group do to the fact that we only had one new member. We were given a very interesting problem and that was fun to work with because I gained new knowledge.

Solving Problems

In class this week we had a project that helped us discuss within our groups how to resolve a large problem. We had to solve a previous problem that had already occured in the past with Exxon Oil Company. I think that our group completed this task very well. In our service learning project group, we haven't really run into a whole lot of problems but I believe that if we were to have some problems we would take the correct actions to resolve them.
In COM320 Boilermakers, we started handing out fliers for our canned food drive, we have handed out many fliers, but as far as what Kyle has told us we haven't recieved any response emails to the competition. This could turn into a problem, but I believe that like our group in class, we the COM320 Boilermakers, could make the right decisions.

Service Project Update

This week I was able to send out a mass email to multiple groups here at Purdue. I still have not heard back from any of them yet but am hopeful that some or all will respond back and take part in the event. I know that Purdue Circle K, my com group, and maybe my com class will be at the event. That at least makes three structures and three actively participating groups.

We also finished up our fliers and are currently trying to distribute them throughout campus. Some of my group members have already distributed them south of campus and in Beering, University, and Recitation. We still need to distribute more of them though soon.

Observation

You can learn a lot by observing someone and what role they play in a group. In our last class we had the chance to sit down and observe a classmate while they were working on there task force project. I think this way of learning can give us a better look at how groups interact and work with eachother. Then we reversed the roles and we had someone observe us. I am looking forward to getting the feedback so i can see what things i did well and what things i could improve on.

Flier for Service Learning Project

For our service learning project, we are advertising the canned food drive and structure building contest through fliers, and writing on a chalkboards, I just finished making the flier which states the time and place for the structure building contest, I think that if we pass enough of these around then we should get more than enough participation in the contest.

Service Project Location and Details

This past week, my group members and I were searching for a place to hold the food can competition. I was able to reserve the first and second floor lobbies of Class of 1950 for the event. I already turned in the event form under Purdue Circle K. So it has been officially assigned.

Now I'm in the process of emailing prospective groups to participate in the event. I went to this link here:

http://www.getinvolved.purdue.edu/Community?action=getMyHome

Get Involved is a website where you can find all sorts of organizations and Fraternities / Sororities. I looked up all the community service organizations and some random organizations to email out to. We are hoping that most if not all organizations will be able to help us get this service project "on a roll."

I also found out where we can have people take cans to during the day. Camilla Lawson is Purdue Circle K's advisor. Her contact information is as follows:

Camilla M. Lawson,
M.S. Ed Manager, Student Learning Center
STEW G-36
E-Mail: cmlawson@purdue.edu
(765) 496-7454

She told us that she will collect the cans in her office during the day and my group and I will pick them up at the end of the day and store them at one of our apartments.

We also have a flier Chris created that we will post up during this next week to advertise our event and donation drive.

Service Project Update

Tuesday we met with Becky Wilson again. We went over final details. We decided on an event date: November 6th. On the 6th we will have the building competition part of our event. But on October 26th we will start collecting cans for the event until the competition date.

We decided that we are going to mass email all student organizations, contact networks of Circle K, and pass out flyiers around campus to advertise the can collection and can competition. We are hoping to maybe reserve a room in the Union for the building event. If that doesn't work, then we will look into another building such as Lambert.

A major group that might help us with collecting cans will be, Kiwanis. Kiwanis is the parent organization of Circle K. After college students graduate they can join Kiwanis to continue helping out their community. Kiwanis last year delivered a truck load of canned foods to Circle K. Circle K said that they might do the same again this year for our group. To find out more info on this group, visit this link: http://www.kiwanislafayettein.org/

I have attached a video link that is an example of what we would like to do with the competition.

After our meeting with circle k on Tuesday it really came to my attention how we are brigning class into our project for others. The contest we are having will be among teams/small groups. So through our project we get to see people outside of class working in small groups. I think this will be a very fun experience for all of us as well as a learning one.
